When we hear the word “work” we assume it refers always to our paid work, our career or job.

However, there is a greater sense of work than this narrow meaning. In this Reiki principle the word work refers to all that we do, outside of ourselves, and internally....our emotional, spiritual and mental work.

As we go through life we should always ask ourselves, did I do the “best” I could? And answering with honesty. The best does not mean always being perfect, but rather putting in our maximum effort in all that we do; realising that we are talented and skilled individuals. And not hiding that light.

If we are honest we often find that sometimes we can also overestimate our abilities and talents. Honesty in this case is not about believing in limitations, but about being realistic about what we can do, and recognising in what areas there is room for improvement.

It is a natural human desire to want to be appreciated and loved. This desire can drive many of us to present ourselves as greater, more talented, richer than we really are. We may be feeling inadequate in the company of others, or vulnerable, and hence we create a little fantasy world around us as a form of protection.

But this form of dishonesty with ourselves will only lead to problems, as we wait for those whom we have deceived to discover the real us behind the façade.

One of the most beautiful bonuses of living a life of honesty is the total freedom from anxiety that it brings. It is a joy to be able to speak and act directly from an open heart and not from a position of ego, which may have self centred aims and ideals. And through our honesty we build deeper and longer lasting relationships with others who may share our sense of inadequacy and vulnerability.

The actions of speaking and behaving dishonestly create a huge amount of negative energy that will eventually be returned to us through the words and deeds of others. The energy we receive is a reflection of the energy that we send out. Hence the more honest, open and loving we are, the more positive energy we will receive.

But being honest comes not only through our words and actions, but from the very core of our being. Our intent should be to live our lives as honestly as possible. When we let ourselves be guided by that intent, then we are truly living in harmony with the universe and our higher selves, and we will be rewarded accordingly. Living honestly does not mean that our life will be free from all challenges and trials, but rather working through them creates a deeper sense of harmony within us that allows more of life’s opportunities to open up before us.

As a healer, being in honest in my work means I must have the same trust in the purity, power and appropriateness of Reiki, that I encourage my clients to develop. Working honestly also means I am able to see clearly that am not the one who heals, but am merely the one who channels the healing energy that allows the client to heal themselves. Hence my ego never enters the client/healer contract, which allows me to remain detached from the outcome and able to allow the Reiki to act for the highest good. This in turn allows the client to be free to express their true feelings, rather than feeling they must live up to my expectations of them, as the healer.

It may appear that the rewards received in this world are unjust and unfair. It seems sometimes that those who lie and cheat become financially rich and successful in business , whilst the honest, moral and kind are left unrewarded. However rewards do not always take the form that we expect. A peaceful mind, a joyful heart and a clear conscience are far greater rewards than money or wealth; rewards that can never be taken away from us or spoiled. These are the riches that honesty brings.

If we are honest with ourselves and our needs and desires, then the Universe can respond honestly and bring you the gifts that you require to learn and develop as a person and spiritual being.
